     The race for space was in full force when the life was removed from this great orator.  At that time only two short years remained for the potential fulfillment of the great vision inspired by a president.  The dreamer did not make it to the summit of rocketry but he did inspire generations to overcome adversities and to be the best at whatever lot was cast their way.  As with space, success is not automatic, but quite often comes about because of previous crashes.

     One must always be mindful of the environment in which one works.  As educators, it is our responsibility to expose our children to different situations that may occur in life.  Each year, we bring different community service providers into the school to help children become acquainted with their jobs.  One such provider is Jeff Spencer of the Hempstead Volunteer Fire Department.  He graciously consented to speak to Franklin School’s children and as a result the school was featured in Newsday's salute to firefighters.
